The journey into adulthood can be a daunting and overwhelming experience. There are so many decisions to make, challenges to overcome, and uncertainties to face. It's during these times that really shape us and it’s during these times that having a mentor can make a deep and positive impact.

A mentor is someone who has walked the path before you, someone who can offer guidance, support, and wisdom based on their own experiences. They can help you navigate the ups and downs of adulthood and certain topics or situations and provide you with the tools and insights you need to succeed.

One of the most powerful aspects of mentorship is the opportunity to learn from someone who has already been through what you're going through. They can share their own successes and failures, giving you a unique perspective and helping you avoid or overcome common barriers. A mentor can offer advice on everything from career choices to personal relationships, to interview preparation and more, helping you make informed decisions that align with your values and goals. Its not really about telling you what to do, its about providing insight and guidance, to coach you through the situation or time, but you’re following through with your own decisions.

Mentorship is about empowerment.

Mentorship also provides a safe space for you to ask questions, seek guidance, and share your fears and concerns. A mentor is there to listen, to offer support, and to provide a fresh perspective when you're feeling stuck. They can help you see things from a different angle and challenge you to think outside the box. This can be incredibly empowering and can help you develop the confidence and clarity you need to navigate the challenges of adulthood, equipping you for not just now, but into the future. Finding a mentor can be a transformative experience, but it's important to approach the process with intention and purpose. Here are a few tips to help you find the right mentor for you: 1. Identify your goals and needs: Before seeking out a mentor, take some time to reflect on what you hope to gain from the relationship. What specific areas of your life do you want guidance and support in? Knowing what you're looking for will help you find a mentor who aligns with your needs. 2. Seek out mentors in your field of interest: If you have a specific career or industry in mind, look for mentors who have experience in that field. They can offer valuable insights and connections that can help you navigate your chosen path. 3. Network and build relationships: Attend industry events, join professional organisations, and connect with people who inspire you. Building relationships with potential mentors can happen organically through networking and genuine connections. 4. Be proactive and ask for mentorship: Once you've identified someone you admire and respect, don't be afraid to reach out and ask if they would be willing to mentor you. Most people are flattered to be asked and are happy to share their knowledge and experience. If they’re unable to help, they can point you in the direction of someone you can.

5. Consider a professional mentor/coach: A professional or dedicated mentor/coach can support you even deeper, with dedicated time and a structured program, helping you to get even more out of the experience and relationship. Consider your capacity, needs, what you're seeking and what you hope to gain, then think about whether a paid mentor/coach is something that will align with you. I meet with my mentees at a frequency that suits them (weekly mainly, monthly also). I then work with them to create a roadmap of things they’re wanting support on, and then we prioritise them based on interest and what’s relevant to them now. Of course, as life adjusts, so do we, and each session is very much about what the mentee is seeking in that moment - whether it’s something specific, something to learn, or even if they just need someone to listen.

Mentorship is a powerful tool that can help young adults navigate the journey into adulthood with confidence and clarity. Discovering a mentor who aligns with your aspirations and requirements can offer invaluable guidance, support, and wisdom. It's an advantage that you don't want to miss out on!
